Is Antique Better?Antique jewellery is making a comeback in terms of popularity but while it is wonderful to have a piece with a history, is it actually better?
If quality is judged purely on apperance then whether antique jewellery is similar quality to contempary jewellery depends on a number of factors. Firstly, the age of your jewellery. The progress in technology, for example the use of a laser cutter is recent and most antique jewellery will not have benefited from this. Furthermore, pre-1970 jewellery will most likely use Tolkowsky's guidelines which while revolutionary during his time, are superseded by modern models for gem designs.
Furthermore, the choice of shape was restricted with older jewellery, where with modern cutting techniques the choice of shape is incredible, whether it be an asscher cut or even something like a star shape. The choice is much more varied and the quality often consistently better than antique jewellery could manage.
That being said, a technically superior gemstone does not necessarily mean you will like it more. Many prefer the simplicity of older shapes and for many the lure of an antique ring has nothing to do with wanting a superior quality of gemstone.
The real attraction of antique jewellery is in the history you buy, and the rarity. Because it is not mass produced you know you are the owner of something special.
And that is better than any mathematical formula for beauty. |
