Engagement Rings: Grain SettingIn the last article we talked about channel setting in engagement rings or wedding rings, whereas here we will talk about a similar type of setting, grain setting.
The main difference between grain and channel is that with a channel setting a 'channel' is cut into the ring and the rings are placed in there. Whereas with a grain setting a channel is still cut into the band but claws are left in. These are not stuck in, but instead cut around so the claws are the same piece of metal as the original band.
This means that more of the diamond is on show with a grain setting, as the diamond is not held beneath band cavities. So more of the diamond is visible which exposes the diamond to more light. Furthermore, because each diamond is held by a seperate set of claws, if one diamond falls out, the other diamonds will be unaffected.
